Embry-Riddle’s Homecoming Entertainment Features Country Singer, Comedian, Aerobatic Performances, Parade

This Year’s Theme is “Board Games: Get on Board and Get with the Game”

Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 21, 2008 -- As Homecoming entertainment this year, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will present country singer Luke Bryan, comedian Greg Giraldo, and sky-high performances by aerobatic champion Matt Chapman and the Mavericks formation flight team. In addition, an energetic and imaginative parade will bring the “Board Games” Homecoming theme to life.

Other events during Embry-Riddle’s Homecoming Week, Nov. 3-9, include an Industry/Career Expo, an aircraft display and activities fair, an Air Jam student talent show, and an outdoor showing of the latest Batman movie, “The Dark Knight.” For the sports-minded, basketball, soccer, and volleyball games are scheduled, as well as a golf tournament. Homecoming Week will wrap up with a Veterans Day ceremony.

The Homecoming events listed below are free and open to the public unless noted otherwise.

Monday, Nov. 3

Men’s Basketball. 2 p.m., Amway Arena, Orlando. The Embry-Riddle Eagles will take on Johnson & Wales University from Miami. Tickets are $10, $22, and $60. Each ticket is a general admission ticket for the Embry-Riddle game and a reserved ticket for the Orlando Magic vs. Chicago Bulls game at 7 p.m. Contact: (386) 323-5000.

Tuesday, Nov. 4, through Friday, Nov. 7

Spirit Sign Contest. Student organizations and university departments are invited to show their Embry-Riddle pride by decorating large wooden signs placed in the following locations around campus: Heritage Walkway, “A” Building Lawn, and Jack R. Hunt Aviator Park on the West Lawn. Spirit signs will be on display through Monday, Nov. 10. Contact: (386) 226-6039.

Wednesday, Nov. 5

Homecoming Kick-Off Social. 7-9 p.m., Red Tail Bar & Grill, Daytona Beach. Alumni and their guests are invited to enjoy complimentary finger foods at this casual event. Hank Foley, alumnus and owner of Red Tail, will unveil an 8-foot-by-10-foot Clipper aircraft model built by Embry-Riddle College of Engineering students. Movie on the Lawn: “The Dark Knight.” 9 p.m., Jack R. Hunt Aviator Park on the West Lawn, next to the John Paul Riddle Student Center, Embry-Riddle. In this intense action film, Batman is driven to his limit as he battles the chaos unleashed by an anarchist mastermind known only as the Joker. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 5-6

Industry/Career Expo. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., ICI Center, Embry-Riddle. More than 100 employers in aviation/aerospace, business, engineering, and high-tech fields will be on hand to talk with jobseekers. Attendees should bring their resumes. Contact: (386) 226-6054.

Thursday, Nov. 6

Chalk Art Contest. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in front of Jack R. Hunt Library, Embry-Riddle. Student organizations and individual students will compete by creating chalk drawing related to the Homecoming “Board Games” theme. Cash prizes will be awarded. Contact: (386) 226-6039.

Fly-In Arrivals. Noon to 4 p.m., Embry-Riddle Flight Line. Alumni flying their own aircraft to campus for Homecoming are encouraged to arrive during this time period to be greeted by other alumni. Contact: (386) 226-6155.

Alumni Dinner Dance. 5-10 p.m., The Shores Resort & Spa, Daytona Beach Shores. Alumni can dance the night away to live music at this semi-formal event. Tickets are $30 and reservations are required. Contact: (386) 323-8025.

Women’s Volleyball. 7-9 p.m., ICI Center, Embry-Riddle. The evening’s opponent is Edward Waters College of Jacksonville, Fla. Homecoming Parade: Embry-Riddle … On a Roll. 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Floats and performances created by student organizations will make their way through campus, ending at the ICI Center. Alumni Basketball Game. 5-6 p.m., ICI Center, Embry-Riddle. Two teams of former players will challenge each other in this Blue vs. Gold opener for the Homecoming game. Tailgate Party. 5-7 p.m., ICI Center parking lot, Embry-Riddle. This outdoor party for the Embry-Riddle community features live music by country singer Luke Bryan, named one of Billboard magazine’s new faces to watch in 2007. Embry-Riddle Eagle Open Golf Tournament. 7:30 a.m. registration, 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, LPGA International, Legends Course, Daytona Beach. The presenting sponsor is Consolidated-Tomoka Land Co., with other sponsorships still available. Alumni, faculty, staff, and university supporters are invited to participate in this 18-hole, four-person scramble, followed by an awards luncheon. The cost of $125 per player covers greens fees; cart; food and drinks before, during, and after golf; and the awards luncheon. Early Years Alumni Breakfast. 9-11 a.m., Crotty Tennis Complex, next to the ICI Center, Embry-Riddle. Alumni and friends are invited to start the day with a casual breakfast featuring alumni from Embry-Riddle’s earlier years. Gordon Wilson, a 2000 Worldwide Campus alumnus, is the guest speaker. The event will include a Heritage Project display outlining Embry-Riddle’s history. Veterans Day Remembrance Ceremony. 11 a.m. to noon, Legacy Walk, Embry-Riddle. Aerobatics Performance. 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., Embry-Riddle. Music, interviews, and a master of ceremonies will entertain the spectators starting at 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Aviation Maintenance Science buildings. The performance begins at 4:45 p.m., featuring a formation flight by the Mavericks and daring maneuvers by aerobatic champion Matt Chapman. This live comedy show features Greg Giraldo, a Comedy Central regular who also has performed on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free for Embry-Riddle students, faculty, and staff with Eagle Card; each Eagle Card admits three guests.
