Phone: 386-226-6525 Sikorsky Aircraft Engineer to Advise New Female Students at Embry-Riddle OrientationRole-Model Alumna Janiece Lorey to Share Her Experiences
Janiece Lorey, a 2006 alumna who’s now an engineer with Sikorsky Aircraft, has applied her commitment to excellence in every facet of her life. While she attended Embry-Riddle she was a Presidential Scholar, played on the women’s soccer team for two years, and was the president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. During her senior year, her team of Embry-Riddle students was selected for a prestigious NASA program in which they conducted an experiment of their own design aboard a specially-modified aircraft simulating weightlessness. She’s also an accomplished violinist and, alongside her orthodontist father, an international humanitarian. “I’m honored to have been chosen as this year’s keynote speaker,” Lorey said. “The For Women Only event is an outstanding opportunity for incoming freshmen women to get valuable tips on how to succeed in college, especially during their first year.”
“Janiece left an indelible impression as a former student,” said Dr. Joanne Detore-Nakamura, director of Diversity Initiatives. “I nominated her as the guest speaker because she epitomizes the most outstanding qualities of the Embry-Riddle graduate, driven not only to excel but also to provide service for the greater good. She’s an outstanding role model for young women.” Lorey’s commitment to assisting first-year students is long-standing. While attending Embry-Riddle to pursue a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering with a concentration in Astronautics, she served as a peer mentor for University 101 classes and tutored in the First Year Programs Office. Her choice of degree program was a smart one. Embry-Riddle’s Aerospace Engineering program is the largest in the nation and is ranked No. 1 in the nation among schools without doctorate programs by U.S. News & World Report. After graduating from Embry-Riddle in 2006, Lorey joined Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, Conn. As a preliminary design engineer in Sikorsky’s advanced design department, she creates aircraft configurations to meet client requests. Her work with the international/commercial division has taken her to Japan and Korea. “I can’t list all of the opportunities that I’ve had with Sikorsky because there have been so many, and I’ve enjoyed them all. I’m in a position where my tasks change from day to day and I’m constantly learning. It’s been a wonderful place to grow as an engineer,” she said. To enhance her career, she’s currently pursuing an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Haven, Conn. Those who’ve been blessed with drive and talent should help others, Lorey believes. Starting at age 16 she’s worked as a dental assistant in the office of her father, Dr. P. Gard Lorey, in Skaneateles, N.Y. This year they spent eight days in El Salvador providing dental services and supplies to several hundred needy people through a Mission of Miracles trip organized by her father. “To see people in these communities coming back with improved dental hygiene is very exciting,” Lorey said. “There were so many people seen in every village that on a few occasions we had to turn people away. I was happy to be able to help.” Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world’s largest, fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace, offers more than 30 degree programs in its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Aviation, Business, and Engineering. The university educates more than 34,000 students annually in undergraduate and graduate programs at residential campuses in Prescott, Ariz., and Daytona Beach, Fla., through the Worldwide Campus at more than 130 campus centers in the United States, Europe, Canada, and the Middle East, and through online learning.
