Embry-Riddle Arts & Letters Series Continues with Classical Piano Concert and Lecture on Hate Crimes

Jamila Tekalli Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 4, 2008 -- The Arts & Letters Series at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University continues in November with a performance by award-winning classical pianist Jamila Tekalli and a presentation on hate crimes by renowned criminologist and author Dr. Jack Levin.

Tekalli will perform J.S. Bach’s Italian Concerto, Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor, and Alexander Scriabin’s Sonata No. 4 in a concert scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Daytona State College’s Theater Center, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach. Admission is $5 at the door and is free to Embry-Riddle and Daytona State College students with valid school ID.

Tekalli has won competition awards from Indiana University, the Music Teachers National Association, and the Stravinsky Awards International Piano Competition. Locally, she’s garnered top prizes from the Orlando Bach Festival Society and the Central Florida Symphony Young Artist Competition. She currently performs solo and chamber music while earning a master’s degree in music at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Jack Levin In a talk titled “The Violence of Hate,” Dr. Jack Levin will share his insights on the nature of hate crimes and the climate that nurtures them on college campuses. This free lecture will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in Embry-Riddle’s Miller Instructional Center auditorium, 600 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach. The event is co-sponsored by the Embry-Riddle Office of Diversity Initiatives.

Dr. Levin is a professor of sociology and criminology at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., teaching social psychology and the nature of prejudice and violence and co-directing the Brudnick Center on Conflict and Violence.

He is the author of 30 books, including Why We Hate, The Functions of Prejudice, and The Will to Kill: Making Sense of Senseless Murder. Additionally, Dr. Levin is a frequent commentator on TV programs such as 20/20, 48 Hours, and Dateline NBC, and has presented to the White House Conference on Hate Crimes, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Education.
